thanks for the info but now i'm wondering if perhaps i've not got -enough- clearance on the valves. i must've turned the engine 6 or 7 times and checked the rocker arms - never did find any freeplay (at the end i wasn't even looking at the notch - just watching the arms and checking them both when they were at top). prolly have to break down and take it in to a shop and have them start me out. t..
